The Mercury Theatre on the Air
Written on 16 Sep, 2005
Yesterday I found this little goldmine on the Web, the Mercury Theatre on the Air website featuring many original recordings.
The Mercury Theatre was founded in 1937 by Orson Welles and made top notch radio entertainment. Most famous is of course the rendition of H.G. Wells War of the Worlds.
The recordings on the site are not in very good quality, and most of them are compressed in 64 Kbps MP3 (or worse, Real Audio). Let’s hope that someday someone can get access to the real recordings, clean them up a little bit and encode them using FLAC or a similar free lossless codec.
Anyway, go ahead and download (using BitTorrent), get yourself a hot cuppa tea, and let Orson Welles genius enchant you!
