Someone over at the Ubuntu community wiki pointed out that there are some work being done to get 3D acceleration for Nvidia cards working with free drivers. Most of this seems to be based of the old Utah-GLX project.
3D running good enough to run Xgl or Luminocity would be great indeed. No one is to my knowledge actually working to get this implemented in Xorg, but together with the reverse-engineering success of the r300 driver there's a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel.
